Why Shower Tile Fails in North Carolina: Greenboard vs Cement Board vs Sealed Waterproof Membranes
Shower tile failure is almost never caused by the tile itself—it fails because tile and grout are naturally porous and allow moisture to pass straight through.
If tile is installed over water-resistant drywall ('greenboard') or unsealed cement backer board, moisture migrates into wall studs, causing wood rot and mold. Under North Carolina residential and plumbing codes, greenboard is strictly prohibited inside shower enclosures. Cement board alone is water-durable but not waterproof; without a continuous topical waterproof sheet or liquid membrane on the board face, moisture saturates the wall assembly.
Comparing the Three Common Shower Substrates
Understanding tile substrates prevents expensive tear-outs:
- Greenboard (Moisture-Resistant Drywall): Prohibited in shower wet areas under NCRC Section R702.4.2. Its gypsum core breaks down rapidly when saturated.
- Cement Backer Board (CBU): Dimensionally stable and will not rot, but water wicks directly through it. It requires an approved moisture barrier behind it or a liquid-applied membrane (RedGard, Hydro Ban) on its face.
- Integrated Foam Waterproof Systems (Schluter-KERDI-BOARD / Wedi): Lightweight, extruded polystyrene panels with bonded waterproof fleece. Seams and fasteners are sealed with waterproof banding, creating an impervious envelope before tiling.
