Carolina crawlspaces frequently fluctuate between 60% and 90% relative humidity during muggy summer months, driving moisture upward through wood subfloors. Wood subfloors swell and contract, causing engineered hardwood planks to cup, buckle, or gap at joints. High-quality rigid-core LVP is completely waterproof and impervious to crawlspace vapor, making it the most trouble-free choice unless the crawlspace is fully encapsulated.
Vapor Drive and Core Stability
In an unencapsulated crawlspace, vapor pressure pushes moisture through subfloor OSB. Solid wood cups quickly; engineered wood handles moderate vapor but can delaminate if bottom-side humidity exceeds 70%. Rigid-core LVP contains zero wood flour and will not swell under humidity swings.
Subfloor Flatness and Preparation
Both materials require subfloors flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot radius. Uneven joist crowns or sagging seams must be ground down or patched with self-leveling underlayment; otherwise, floating LVP locking joints will snap under foot traffic.
