Architectural drawings are generally protected by copyright. A screenshot, saved image or brochure can provide inspiration, but it does not grant construction rights.

Plan sellers commonly offer licenses for a single build, while other licenses may allow broader reuse. Read the seller's terms and ask exactly what the purchase includes before paying.

Ask the plan seller the right questions

Confirm whether the package includes a construction license, how many builds it permits, what file formats are delivered, whether modifications are allowed and whether engineering is included.

Ask whether the plan is designed for North Carolina codes and climate conditions, and whether the designer can support local revisions.

Expect site and code adaptations

A plan selected online may not fit the lot's setbacks, slope, driveway, septic area or orientation. Foundation design, structural details, energy requirements and wind or snow criteria may also require professional review.

Bring AGCS the plan website link, proof of purchase or license, available plan files, survey or plat, property information and a list of desired changes.
