# Tie-In Details: Joining a New Addition Roof to an Existing Shingle Roof

The most common point of water intrusion on home additions is the roof tie-in intersection. Many inexperienced crews simply lay new valley metal over old shingles or butt framing against existing trim.

To create a 100% watertight roof tie-in, existing shingles must be stripped down to bare OSB/plywood sheathing at least 3 to 4 feet back from the intersection, framing secured into structural rafters with engineered hardware, and a fully adhered modified bitumen membrane installed continuously across the tie-in valley.

## Primary Roof Tie-In Assemblies

Different architectural rooflines require distinct structural approaches:

- Valley Overframe (California Valley): When an addition ridge sits lower than the main ridge, rafters frame directly over the existing roof deck. Shingles must be stripped to bare wood so fasteners bite into structural decking.
- Ridge Line Tie-Ins: When extending a roofline straight out, existing gables are opened, rafters aligned, and ridge beams structurally strapped with tie plates.
- Low-Pitch Transitions (Under 4:12): If an addition ties in at a shallow pitch (e.g., 2:12 or 3:12 porch), asphalt shingles require specialized underlayment under NCRC R905.2.2, or standing seam metal transitions.

## Critical Flashing Details

AGCS installs a minimum 36-inch width of self-adhered Ice & Water Shield centered over the tie-in valley and individual L-shaped step flashing pieces at sidewalls. Continuous single-piece flashings that buckle under thermal expansion are never used.
