There are no through-fastener holes in the weather surface, so there is nothing to work loose. Systems range from snap-lock (simpler, for steeper slopes) to mechanically seamed (double-locked, for lower slopes and high-wind zones). Panel runs must be engineered for the panel's own thermal movement—both width and length. ## Where Each Belongs For a home's primary roof, standing seam is the durable, low-maintenance choice and the one that pairs safely with modern underlayments and ventilation design. For sheds, porches, barns, and shops where budget rules and periodic screw maintenance is acceptable, exposed-fastener paneling does its job well. Both need correct underlayment (synthetic or self-adhered membrane at eaves and valleys), closed-cell closure strips at ridges and eaves, and flashings matched to the panel profile.
