# Roof Leaking During a Storm? What to Do Right Now

## Safety comes first

Never go onto a roof during or right after a storm. Wet shingles are slick, wind gusts are unpredictable, and damaged areas can give way. Stay out from under any ceiling that is sagging or bulging — it may be holding water. If water is near a light fixture, outlet or the electrical panel, turn off power to that area at the breaker if you can do it from a dry spot.

## Protect the inside

- Move furniture, electronics and rugs out of the drip area.
- Catch water with buckets or bins, and put towels down to protect the floor.
- If a ceiling is bulging with water, a professional can relieve it in a controlled way. Keep people and pets away from it.
- If you can safely reach the attic, a bucket under an active drip can keep water off the ceiling.

## Document everything

Take photos and video of the inside damage and, from the ground, any visible roof damage, fallen limbs or shingles in the yard. Note the date and time. Keep receipts for anything you buy or pay for to protect the home. Check your policy for its deadline to report damage. Our guide to insurance and roof leaks (https://agcshomesolutionsllc.com/blog/does-homeowners-insurance-cover-roof-leaks-nc) explains what insurers typically look at.

## Get the roof protected

The first goal is stopping more water from coming in; the permanent repair comes after the full damage is inspected. AGCS responds promptly to urgent roof damage, and calls are taken seven days a week during posted hours (Monday–Saturday 8 AM–9 PM, Sunday 9 AM–9 PM). When the roof is safe to reach, we address the exposed area, then inspect the roof and attic and plan the permanent repair. See emergency roof repair (https://agcshomesolutionsllc.com/emergency-roof-repair-lincolnton-nc).

## After the storm

Water left in insulation and drywall can lead to mold. Once the leak is stopped, wet insulation usually has to be removed and stained or soft drywall replaced. Because AGCS is a licensed general contractor, the repair can include the decking, framing, insulation and ceilings, not just the shingles.

## Watch out for door-knockers

After big storms, out-of-area crews often go door to door. Ask for a North Carolina license number, a local address and proof of insurance before you sign anything, and read any contract before signing. See hiring a licensed contractor in NC (https://agcshomesolutionsllc.com/blog/hiring-licensed-general-contractor-nc).

## Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put a tarp on my roof myself?

Not during or right after a storm. Tarping requires walking a wet, possibly damaged roof. Call for help and protect the inside in the meantime.

Do I need to report the leak to my insurer right away?

Check your policy for its reporting deadline. Many policies also expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, which is why documenting and protecting the home matters.
