# Nailing Patterns: 4-Nail vs. 6-Nail Enhanced Wind Resistance on Shingles

Shingles anchor to your roof only through their nails. In a Piedmont thunderstorm with 70 mph gusts, a shingle's wind rating is only as good as the pattern, placement, and penetration of those nails.

Most manufacturers rate their architectural shingles at 110 to 130 mph—when installed to the printed specification. Off-spec nailing quietly voids that rating.

## The Standard 4-Nail Pattern

For standard roof slopes, manufacturers specify four nails per shingle, placed on the nailing line roughly 5 to 6 inches up from the tab edge, spaced evenly, with the two inner nails and two end nails positioned so the next course's adhesive seal strip covers the fastener heads.

Nails must penetrate at least 3/4 inch into the deck or fully through it, driven flush—not over-driven through the mat, not under-driven with heads standing proud, not angled so the shank tears the shingle edge.

## The 6-Nail Enhanced Pattern

Six nails per shingle is required on steep slopes (typically above 8:12 or as printed), in high-wind installations, and to achieve enhanced wind warranties. With manufacturer-approved enhanced nailing and appropriate sealant in specified zones, some systems carry ratings to 130 mph or a 15-year wind warranty.

The added cost is small: a few more nails and minutes per square. AGCS uses the 6-nail pattern on all full replacements as standard practice, not an upcharge.

## Where Wind Attacks: Rakes, Ridges, Eaves

Wind uplift concentrates at the roof's perimeter: rake edges, eaves, and ridges. Many manufacturer instructions call for sealant dabs or starter-strip adjustments in these zones when installing to enhanced wind specs.

Capping courses and ridge shingles get the same attention; a ridge cap nailed two-putty-high with no cap shingles is the first thing a 70 mph gust finds.

## Storm Documentation Note

If a future storm damages your roof, having installation documentation—including the nailing pattern used—supports accurate insurance adjustment of the claim. AGCS provides that record with every roof we install.
