# Can You Move a Kitchen Sink to an Island Without Tearing Up the Whole Floor?

Yes, you can move a kitchen sink to a freestanding center island, but plumbing requires a completely different drainage and venting assembly than a perimeter wall sink.

Because an island has no wall cavity behind it to carry a vertical vent pipe up through the roof, draining water would pull a vacuum and suck the P-trap dry without proper venting—letting sewer gas into your home. Over crawlspaces, installation is straightforward; over slabs, saw-cutting or code-approved Air Admittance Valves are used.

## Venting Options Under North Carolina Plumbing Code

State plumbing code provides two approved methods for island sink venting:

- Air Admittance Valves (AAV / NCPC Section 918): A one-way mechanical valve (ASSE 1051 certified) mounted inside the island base cabinet. Negative pressure opens the valve to draw air in when water drains; gravity seals it shut to block sewer gas.
- Prescriptive Island Fixture Loop Vent (NCPC Section 916): A piping loop that rises under the countertop, loops 180 degrees back down into the crawlspace, and ties into a dry wall vent through the roof.

## Crawlspace vs Concrete Slab Rough-In

Over crawlspaces, AGCS cores subfloors inside cabinet toe-kicks and slopes drain lines at 1/4" per foot. Over slabs, diamond-bladed saw-cutting and trenching through concrete are required to route new drain piping.
