The fastest way a deck dies is not at the ledger or the footings—it at the top of the joists, where thousands of deck-screw holes punch through a wet surface and hold water against bare framing. Joist tape (a self-adhering flashing membrane applied over joist tops before the deck boards go down) seals those penetrations. The question is not whether to use it, but which kind and how. ## Why Fastener Holes Rot Joists Every deck screw creates a drainage path into the joist. Water pools on the flat 2x surface between the deck boards, wicks into each hole, and the screw's counterbore holds a bead of moisture against bare wood. Over 10 to 15 years, that localized saturation produces the classic crown rot that turns solid-looking joists into punky, screw-loosening sponges. Once the top face rots, refastening does nothing—the structural fibers are gone. ## Butyl vs. Asphalt (Modified Bitumen) Tapes Butyl tapes use a butyl rubber adhesive: excellent cold-weather flexibility, strong adhesion to damp and treated lumber, minimal bleed, and long UV-free service life under deck boards. Butyl is the premium choice and the AGCS default. Asphalt-based tapes (modified bitumen, similar to ice-and-water shield) cost less and adhere well, but can soften and bleed in Piedmont roof-deck heat, may stain composite decking, and stiffen in cold weather. Quality varies widely by brand. Either way, the tape must be a self-adhering membrane, never duct tape or builder's paper. ## Correct Installation Sequence Tape goes on after joists are set and before deck boards: one continuous run over each joist top lapping a few inches down both faces, wrapped over the rim board and ledger cap, and over beam tops where boards cross. Cleat or temporarily tack the tape's edges—fasteners from the deck boards themselves pin it permanently. Seal the ledger-side penetrations too; the tape does not replace ledger flashing, it complements it. ## Does It Double Lifespan? Honest answer: it removes the dominant failure mode. A deck framed with quality treated lumber, good ventilation, correct fasteners, and full joist protection can realistically outlast an unprotected frame by decades. 'Doubles lifespan' is defensible as a statement about the rot that actually kills decks—just not a guarantee of specific years.
