# Curbless Showers on Wooden Subfloors: Recessed Joists vs Built-Up Ramps

Building a true zero-threshold curbless shower on a framed wooden subfloor requires dropping the shower structure downward into the floor joist cavity so finished shower tile meets the bathroom floor at a flush seam.

Without altering framing, remodelers are forced to build awkward ramps that create tripping hazards. To build a code-compliant zero-entry shower, existing floor joists must be structurally recessed or an engineered structural tray system installed directly between framing members.

## Two Approved Framing Approaches

Framing assemblies must maintain structural load capacity while creating recess depth:

- Recessing Joists: Floor joists are sistered, cut down 1.5 to 2 inches, and reinforced with steel straps or ledger strips hung inside joist pockets to drop the 3/4" subfloor downward.
- Engineered Structural Shower Trays (Schluter / Wedi): High-density, pre-sloped rigid waterproof composite trays set directly on top of joists, with perimeter edges matching adjacent subfloor height.

## Slope and Waterproofing Rules

Shower floors must slope toward drains at 1/4" to 1/2" per foot under NCRC P2709.3. Waterproof sheet membranes must extend at least 3 to 4 feet out onto the main bathroom floor with uncoupling underlayment to protect against bather overspray.
