Because concrete has high compressive strength but very low tensile strength, shrinkage creates internal tension that will crack the slab. Control joints do not prevent concrete from cracking; their purpose is to create weakened straight planes so that inevitable cracks occur underneath the groove where they remain unseen. If a slab cracks diagonally across the field, the control joints were cut too shallow, spaced too far apart, or cut too late. ## The Three Golden Rules of Control Joints (ACI 302.1R) American Concrete Institute standards govern proper control joint design: - Joint Spacing (24x to 30x Rule): In inches, joint spacing must never exceed 24 to 30 times slab thickness. For a 4-inch slab, joints must be spaced no more than 8 to 10 feet apart. For a 6-inch slab, spacing can reach 12 to 15 feet. Panels should remain square (aspect ratio under 1.5 to 1). - Joint Depth (1/4 Thickness Rule): The groove must be at least one-fourth (25%) of total slab thickness. For a 4-inch slab, the cut must be a full 1 inch deep. A shallow 1/4-inch surface scratch will fail to guide the crack. - Timing of the Cut: Early-entry sawcutting must take place as soon as the concrete surface supports foot traffic without marring (typically 4 to 12 hours after finishing).
